June 2014 Newsletter

Our last meeting was held at the home of Steve and Susan Abbanat, just through the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland in Alameda County. There were right around 25 people in attendance.  Susan and Steve had a very nice table of hors d’oeuvres prepared and theywere delicious.  We’d like to thank them for allowing us into their home for this meeting.  It really is appreciated very much.

Bill English made a PowerPoint presentation on SO2 Management that was very well received by the attendees.  There were lots of questions and excellent answers given by our presenter.  Our thanks go out to Bill for coming up with this very important subject and presentation.

On a different subject, historically our August meeting has been held at a winery on a Saturday or Sunday during the day.  We had gravitated into only bringing hors d’oeuvres, desserts and wine to this function.  Not my job, but, if anyone has any suggestions and/or very important Points of Contact about our using their facility, please let me know so that I can incorporate it into our schedule.  Thank you.

Speaking of Bill English, in a good way, he has agreed to make another presentation to us at the Friday night, June 27th meeting.  His comments on that talk are shown below.  It sounds to me like his timing is excellent and a great question and answer period is forthcoming:

If you would like me to do a presentation at the next meeting on preparing for the fall crush and the issues and alternative approaches to the crush and fermentation, I can do another PowerPoint presentation. Some of his may seem to be elementary to many, but valuable to the newer members. I would delve into the subject in enough depth to generate controversy among the group, however, discussing alternatives to the standard book method. It may be interesting to see how many different ways there are to do the same "standard" thing.

Our next meeting location has changed.  Dan Boykin and Gerard Davidson have swapped meetings.  The June 27th meeting will be held at the home of Gerard and Geraldine Davidson in Dublin starting at around 7:00 p.m.  The July 25th meeting will be held at the home of Dan and Marianne Boykin in Concord.

DIRECTIONS: From the North: Take Highway 680 South to Exit #31, Alcosta Blvd.  At the light at the end of the offramp, turn left onto San Ramon Valley Blvd.  Go straight and it becomes San Ramon Rd.  Turn right onto West Vomac Road.  Take the first left onto Vomac Court.  The Davidson home is located at 8146 Vomac Court, Dublin.  Their telephone number, should you get lost, is (925) 551-0172.

From the South: Take Highway 680 North to the Alcosta Blvd. exit and turn left, back over the freeway.  Turn left at the next signal, San Ramon Rd., Turn right on West Vomac Road.  Take the first left onto Vomac Court.  The Davidson home is located at 8146 Vomac Court, Dublin.  Their telephone number, should you get lost, is (925) 551-0172.

Please bring with you: 1) a bottle of wine for the hors d’oeuvres table; 2) a wine glass; 3) a folding chair and 4) a jacket as it might get cold outside.  Unless it rains, (Ha, ha!) the meeting will likely be held outside on the Davidson deck overlooking their newly planted vineyard.

The meeting again will be held starting at right around 7:00 p.m. on Friday night, June 27, 2014.
