Last month’s meeting was held at the home of Marv & Carolyn Schick in Walnut Creek. There were right around 60 people in attendance. I’d like to thank the Schicks very much for the use of their home for this meeting that was to hand out the awards for the Red Wine winners from our January 21, 2012 Professional Wine Judging. I’d also like to thank the attendees for the hors d’oeuvres that they brought to the meeting. Carolyn’s foot is still healing and she was unable to assist in setting up or tearing down after the meeting. The Schicks also graciously forgave the $150 allowance for hors d’oeuvres and the use of their home for this big meeting. It was truly appreciated.
All but one of the First Place Red Wines was poured for the attendees and written spec sheets handed out and the winners then proceeded to tell us how they made their winning wines. Everyone did a great job and everyone there that night had a great time.
Our Program Committee had its first meeting on March 8, 2012. I’m sure that some very good ideas were presented at that meeting. The only meeting subject that I’m currently aware of is that of an idea from CCWG member John Walkinshaw. John felt that many of the CCWG members have been making wine a long time and during that time, many interesting winemaking innovations have been devised by those members. John would like the membership to email him at email@example.com with a description of your individual innovations so that he can gather them for a meeting in the “early Fall.” Please think about your individual situation and let John know about these clever innovations for this future program. John said that he has three things himself and I have one that I’ll be passing on.
Our “Wine Czar,” Bonneau Dickson has forwarded me the Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary’s proposal for their First Annual Wine Discovery event likely to be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 on the grounds of the Cal Shakes theater property in Orinda. It is to be fashioned after the St. Supery Winery’s fundraiser supporting the Yountville Volunteer Fire Department. There will be a Professional Wine Judging the morning of the event and ribbons will be awarded for various categories including Best of Show. Anyone interested in entering their wine and also pouring it at the 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. wine tasting party should contact Bonneau to let him know of your interest.
The CCWG is in desperate need of a family to host the meeting to be held on Friday, April 27, 2012. Tyler and Pat Hunt suddenly find themselves with a conflict that day and cannot host the meeting. They have graciously volunteered their home for Nouveau Night to be held on Friday night, December 7, 2012. The April 27th meeting is a “Regular” meeting and the allowance for hors d’oeuvres and the use of their home is $100. Please give me a call if you’re able to support the group on that night. Thanks.
Our next meeting is another “biggie.” At this meeting all of the awards for White Wines and Dessert/Fruit wines and one remaining Red Wine winner will be handed out. All of the First Place winners wine from our January 21, 2012 Professional Wine Judging will be sampled and Information Sheets handed out while the winners will give us a short talk on how their award winning wines were made.
The next meeting will be held Friday, March 30th at around 7:00 p.m. at the home of Bob and Mary Lu Burchard in Martinez. DIRECTIONS: From Highway 680, take the Highway 4 West exit toward Martinez/Richmond.ROUTE #1 - Take the Pine St./Center Ave. exit and turn left back under freeway on Center St. After about 0.1 miles, turn right on Muir Station Rd. Go about 0.4 miles, turn left onto Pleasant Hill Rd. East. The next left is Donaleen Ct. The Burchard’s address is 151 Donaleen Ct., Martinez. The alternative is ROUTE #2 - The freeway exit after Pine/Center is Alhambra Ave. Take that exit and turn left, again, back under the freeway. Turn left on Alhambra Way. Special Request: BRING A CHAIR & A JACKET WITH YOU! Also, don't forget a wine glass and a bottle of your best for the hors d'oeuvres table prior to the meeting. The outside “meeting” will start at around 7:00 p.m. Don’t forget. It’s Friday, March 30th. In case of rain, we’ll all squeeze inside their home. It’ll be cozy, believe me.
I’ll have all of the ribbons and medals along with the judge’s comments available at this meeting. The more of you that show and pick up their notes and awards, the fewer that will have to be “snail” mailed to you at CCWG expense. I’d like to especially thank Ken Muehring for, once again, volunteering to take care of the ribbons and medals this year.
